We had the rare privilege to bring the Sydney Opera House to life for the highly anticipated Vivid Sydney festival. Bemo created all the visuals which was choreographed to a contemporary orchestral score lead by Kelsey Lu. We were tasked with creative direction, VFX, design and animation, from concept through final delivery, including on-site supervision.

The Floral Ballet brought the Australian botanic wonders to life through a hypnotic fusion of contemporary dance and motion capture technology. Australia’s unique native plant species inspired the concept and execution, including character design, color, and movement. Native floral life was presented in deep connection to the First Nations people and their story of culture and dance.

Our character design stemmed from the botanical characteristics of each unique plant. The native plants included New South Wales Waratah, Kangaroo Paws, Hakeas, and Red Beard Orchids.

Each flora character was designed with the intention of fluid, expressive movement which was rigged and driven by a contemporary dancer. We filmed our talent on a motion capture stage and translated that data to drive our character animations. This beautiful choreography, coupled with an original music score, truly brought each character to life.

Meticulous attention to detail kept each unique plant characteristic, while also being driven by the form and nuance of human expression.

In addition to our floral characters, we also designed otherworldly environments to set the stage for each act. These 3D compositions included synchronized lighting within complementary floral worlds which added an overall mystique to the show.

Upon completion of each unique act, the entire show was projection mapped on the Sydney Opera House and played in sync with an original music score. Our presentation was the centerpiece of the entire festival.

Design and look development was essential in finding our visual language and guiding our technical workflow.
